Marle Place Scoops Gold in Gardening for Wildlife Scheme
Marle Place Gardens and Gallery in Brenchley has again been recognised for its outstanding contribution to gardening for wildlife with a gold award from the Kent Wildlife Trust and Tunbridge Wells Borough Council. The award was presented to owner Gerald Williams by the Deputy Mayor, Councillor John Cunningham at Cranbrook Council Offices.
Visitors to these beautiful gardens, which are open to the public between April
1 to October 8 2007, can enjoy the flowers shrubs and trees and also the varied and interesting wildlife attracted to these ideal surroundings.
'At Marle Place we have meadows which are left undisturbed during the summer months', says Gerald and these become home to hundreds of Meadow Brown Butterflies, our woodland and lakes also harbour wildlife, including dragonflies and kingfishers and we have plenty of nesting sites including some for birds of prey including Sparrow Hawks.
Gerald and Lindel Williams together with one full time gardener are responsible for all the hard word in keeping the gardens at their best and believe that anyone can create a garden for wildlife without having to make huge changes to an existing garden. Even the untidy areas within a garden are a haven for small mammals and insects.
'The vital elements' says Lindel 'are what most people will already have in their garden, water, herbaceous plants, trees and shrubs together with climber-clad walls and fences to provide good nesting sites. A good idea is to place a bird table somewhere easily visible from the house with hooks to place bird feeders. A good tip is to buy squirrel proof feeders or make sure you hang them from branches that won't support a squirrel's weight.'
